TLC Promise Me Recognition Ceremony

After successfully fulfilling its promises made four months ago to the less fortunate, disabled and underprivileged, The Truly Loving Company’s TLC Promise Me campaign officially came to a close via a Recognition Ceremony on the 10th November 2010, in honour of all its participants. The campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and Bernama TV as its Official TV partner saw 70 wishes granted from TLC’s four charity partners such as The Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children Association Johor Bahru, Hospis Malaysia, National Stroke Association of Malaysia and Rumah Aman

(TLC Founder and CEO, Julia Chong)

The ceremony saw all TLC Promise Me participants receiving their certificates of appreciation from Julia Chong, CEO and Founder of The Truly Loving Company. “We are extremely delighted with the levels of engagement of our youth participants such as AIESEC Malaysia, ELC International School and Nuffnang together with caring corporations. Collectively we surpassed our expectations of our initial campaign goals and won over the hearts and minds of our respective communities by our actions”. Chong added. She later presented certificates of appreciation to the campaign’s media partners and cited that their participation enabled the campaign to highlight extraordinary stories of how youths were helping the less fortunate regardless of race, religion or creed.

(AIESEC Malaysia President Mohamad Alif)

(Nuffnang blogger Kimberly Low)

(Divya Kolakada and Thariq Rudy of ELC International School)

The audience was also treated to a story-telling session, where three selected youth participants shared their TLC Promise Me moments with the audience. Mohammad Alif, President of AIESEC Malaysia, Nuffnang blogger Kimberly Low and ELC International School head student Thariq Rudy collectively described the sense of empowerment they received by taking charge of their respective pledges and successfully fulfilling it. Ms Low aptly summed up her experience, “I am still overwhelmed and touched by the amount of support shown by not just friends but complete strangers. I’ve promised myself that whenever I feel jaded or disappointed with people, most often than not over petty, silly issues, I will always think about this amazing display of generosity, kindness and selflessness to remind myself again that there is good in this world.”

The Recognition Ceremony concluded with Chong’s remarks that TLC’s Promise Me had demonstrated to the nation that via the courage, tenacity and warmth of all its participants that lending a helping hand to the underprivileged in our society is rewarding and ultimately strengthens our ties to the communities that we all belong to.

When about her personal wish from the campaign, she replied, “As we Malaysians move together in transforming our country into a high-income nation, my personal wish is for us all to develop a culture of caring for our communities regardless of race, religion or creed. That way, the wealth of our nation’s soul is not only measured by the size of its coffers but also by the warmth of its people and its willingness to help others in need.”

Izzul and Genting Highlands

Let me recount my weekend.

On Friday, I was in Penang as i was invited by my girlfriend to attend “Altera Family Day”–the place where she works. I have lots of fun where i was given a girlfriend-guided tour of the facilities.

It was my first time chilling in her cubicle…

Check it out. She has dual monitor for her to do her job.

I rock out at the game room..

The game room is equipped with a digital electronic drum set, a keyboard, and a mic for employees to sing the work blues away.

I showed off my button-mashing skills to a bunch of seven year olds…

“Now press this button to run away from my combos…”

I checked out the skills of other employees at pool and air hockey…

and i checked out my girlfriend’s flirting skill…

She still has it!

and had lunch like a king at the cafeteria….

*droooolllll*

It was a great Family Day organized by Altera. With soaring spirit, i head back to KL in preparation for the great outing i have been waiting for–fulfilling Izzul’s wish to ride the cable car at Genting Highlands.

Thanks Altera!

With less than five hours of sleep, i woke up feeling energized and ready for a full day of fun with the most cheerful boy I have ever met. Encik Azam gave my friends a tour of the orphanage and i was glad to know that children are very well taken care of.

30 children! A glance on Rumah Aman website shows that the kids aspires to be teacher, firemen, and mostly (you guessed it WRONG!) army and navy.
Are you ready Izzul? Urfah (in black) is the guardian and makes sure that there is nothing wrong going on in this trip.

At 10 am, we head out to One Utama to buy tickets to the cable car ride and to have lunch as we were all famished. “Prince for the day” Izzul chose MacDonald’s.

Izzul ordered Ayam Goreng MacD. The good boy only ate one and kept another piece for dinner. He even threw away his empty coke cup and fries box. According to Urfah, the boys are thought to not over eat and clean up after themselves. The boys are independent from a very young age. I think it is a valuable lifelong lesson and character building in the world of naughty brats!

After lunch, we decided to take a little “detour” and test out Daytona first.

“I just overtook you dude…”

We arrived at the Sky Park lower station around 1pm. Because it was a weekend AND a school holiday, the cable car queue was out of this world. It was pure madness.

We waited for over 45 minutes….
Izzul’s wish: FULFILLED!

I wanted Izzul to feel the blast of cold fog and enjoyed the view. We were at 6,000 feet above sea level! It was a moment Izzul would cherish as we sit and have a nice cup of hot cocoa with a slice of strawberry pie while enjoying the view and feel the cold almost winter-like breeze.

Izzul also had the fun of his young life–going for thrilling rides. We’re talking crazy swings and pirate ships!

But it was a shame that we could not ride the roller coaster as Izzul wanted to ride it, but it was already closed. Nevertheless, Izzul head home safe and sound. Oh did i mention that Izzul vomited on the way down from Genting because of the steep road? We stopped by a gas station to buy some minyak angin and a piece of sandwich to hold the stomach, and for Izzul to clean up. Such a brave independent Navy-to-be!

After excluding the expenses for the trip, we managed to make a donation of RM358.00 (out of RM470.00) to Rumah Aman.

I then rushed off to an event at Sunway Giza. At 11.45pm, off i went to Sri Pentas to host 8TV Nite Live from12:45am to 1:45am.

It was a long, long weekend. But i was happy that i get to go beyond Izzul’s  innocent wish of soaring 6,000 feet above sea level. To see his face lights up when he rode the cable car for the first time was totally priceless. To this day, i still recounts his expression as we had our hot cocoa and light refreshment and gazed at the  magnificent mountainview and the rainforest scenery. And how about seeing Izzul’s face flushed with happiness after riding the rides at Genting Theme Park? Unforgettable.

A heap of thanks to my manager Julian Lee, my PA Cheryl, and my friends Emily, Alex, Elaine, Danyal, and Ben for your support and time to make the Genting trip more exciting. Thank you TLC for the opportunity to get to know the staffs and children at Rumah Aman, Izzul, and this wonderful life changing experience. With God’s blessing, i hope to continue on this selfless journey.

We did it!!!

This was probably the hardest and most audacious pledge – to fulfill Hospis Malaysia’s 15 wishes for medical equipment to ease the suffering of their patients. Our journey wasn’t easy as we quickly found out that fulfilling many of their patient’s wishes is both difficult and intangible. It breaks our heart when some of the wishes were for the patients wishing to be in less pain or a father wishing to live a little longer so that he would be able to see his daughter attend her first day of school.

There was also the fact that it would be irresponsible of us to expose youths to bereavement during this campaign. After much brainstorming,  we arrived at a solution where we replaced the 15 wishes of individuals to become 15 pieces of medical equipment which Hospis Malaysia needed. As a charity which provides palliative care, Hospis Malaysia also loans medical equipment without charge to their poorer patients. Unfortunately there is a constant shortage and a long waiting list for items such as nebulizers and oxygen concentrators.

We felt that this was the most appropriate action that would benefit Hospis Malaysia but were equally shocked by the amount we need to raise – RM34,400! It looked like a very long road for us, especially when this campaign was the first-of-its-kind and we had to find a way (or many) to deliver on our pledge!

That was when we had to spread the Hospis Malaysia pledge to just about everybody we knew and ask them to help us fulfill it. It was a nerve-racking journey and at the end of the day, everybody pulled together to make it possible and we actually overdelivered on our initial pledge! Can’t believe it till this day!!!

Making it possible were the kind folks from Bald4Good (by Wit Ink Creative), AIESEC Malaysia, Bernama TV and TLC’s own Wonderladies. Their individual stories can be found throughout the website and it serves as an inspiration to the dreams and wishes we can achieve together in helping the less fortunate!

Leading initiatives in Social Engagement

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 October 2010 – The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato’ Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, fulfilled the final two pledges she made under the Truly Loving Company’s Promise Me Campaign, to which the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development is an active partner.

The campaign aims to facilitate the engagement of young Malaysians in the communities they belong to, and channel their collective energies toward making a difference, no matter how small. As a campaign partner, Dato’ Sri Shahrizat on behalf of the Ministry, agreed to personally fulfil 3 pledges. Today, the Minister fulfilled the wishes of 32-year old Vimalnathan and Madam Chong Moi Yoke, a stroke survivor.

Vimalnathan, a resident of the Handicapped and Mentally Retarded Children Centre Selangor, currently suffers from pains in his legs due to poor mobility and poor blood circulation. He would like nothing better than to have a comfortable easy chair that would alleviate his ever present discomfort.

Madam Chong, a widow living with her family in Petaling Jaya, spends most of her time alone with her maid while her son is at work and her 18-year old grandchild is at college. Her fondest wish is to spend quality time with her family in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Dato’ Sri Shahrizat fulfilled both wishes: she presented Vimalnathan with an easy chair and Madam Chong with a weekend package at the Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort for her entire family. She said,

“I hope that my personal journey together with participating youths from all walks of life and caring corporations will show fellow Malaysians that lending a helping hand to the underprivileged among us is rewarding and ultimately strengthens our ties to the communities that we belong to”.

Fundraising-At-Work – The Finale

Work can get a bit dull? Not at M Moser Kuala Lumpur!

We had great fun and learnt so much in this journey of discovery. Thank you TLC for this opportunity. We look forward to the next cycle of TLC Promise Me!

TLC Promise Me Recognition Ceremony

What : TLC Promise Me Recognition Ceremony
When : 10 November 2010
Where : ZEHN Function Hall [at] Bangsar

This was one event that I’ve missed out due to work commitment. I was kinda disappointed for not being able to attend this recognition ceremony because I thought it would be something really meaningful and wonderful.

Remember the TLC Promise Me Campaign I took part in a few months back? If you don’t, you can always read about the post here again :) I’m proud to announce to all that all participants have fulfilled the pledges they made, that includes me! :D :D

It was one simple event where all the participants of the campaign went up the stage to collect their certificates. Because I wasn’t there, Michelle – the sexy blogger manager went up the stage in behalf of me from Madam Julia Chong, the CEO of TLC.

Cindy, Kimberly and Saimatkong – the blogger who took part in the campaign and attended the ceremony.. Picture taken from Kimberly’s blog. Awww I wished I was there…

Besides that, Kimberly was invited up stage share my experience participating in this campaign :) She has done great in this campaign! She actually managed to raised up quite a big amount of funds which was good enough to get 3 brand new hospital beds to Goo Tyng Tong and his friends. You can read more about her pledge here!

The group picture of some of the many Promise Me participants! :D

And this is my certificate! I feel proud and great of myself. Not only because I was being recognised but the fact that I’ve actually made a little boy’s wish come true! :) Although the fund wasn’t very high compared to the others, but really I truly thank everyone who has contributed in this. I wouldn’t have made it without the support and sponsors of you guys. I shall share this credit to everyone who helped!

Thanks so much! And I’m also thanking you guys in behalf of Little Nazhim. He must be good at cycling already!!! :)

TLC Series: The wrap-up

When you do something good, you shouldn’t do it to get recognition or even to expect anything in return. You do it for genuine reasons; to help others, to make yourself happy, or anything else that motivates you to do something good.

I participated in the TLC Promise Me programme., not because I wanted fame or fortune, but I really wanted to be able to help someone and in the process, help me become a more grounded person too.

Mdm Chan is a stroke victim and after getting to know her and her daughter, I realized that I’ve got it good. Not the material things, but the fact that I have all my senses working and I don’t need assistance to walk/talk etc. You really never know how to appreciate something until it’s gone.

I got a Raya message from Mdm Chan and it felt so good to be remembered by her! Like I said, never expect anything after you’ve given your all for a good cause, but when you actually DO get something back, it’s a bonus!

Like this TLC recognition certificate.

TLC had a wrap-up event to close the TLC Promise Me campaign. I wasn’t able to attend due to my schedule, but I got some pictures from Nuffnang for you guys to see.

All of the Nuffnang bloggers who participated got up to get their certificates and had a group photo with all the other participants. Must’ve been fun to gather and share stories!

Thanks to TLC for organizing this campaign, thanks to Nuffnang for letting me be a part of this campaign, thanks to A Cut Above and Mimpikita for being my awesome sponsors, and thanks Mdm Chan and Cathy for letting me into your lives.

Even without this TLC programme, we should all do our part in helping the lives of others in any way we can.

P/S: You can read about my TLC Promise Me experience with Mdm Chan by entering “TLC Series” in the PD search box on the side bar.

I have got my cert!

My pledge was to get an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) for Mr Kau at NASAM Ampang. He’s in 60+ years of age and wheelchair bound and really need this to support him. I came out with a Charity CAR Wash Idea and yes I made it and even I can get Mr Kau a customized AFO that suits him.

Thanks to everyone who support me in this Charity CAR Wash campaign, especially members from MyForteClub and thanks to Mr Raymond from Shine N Shield who sponsor the venue for me to run the charity campaign to raise fund for Mr Kau.

Look how happy it could be if we could help others.

Mr Kau related his experience as a stroke survivor and must be thankful that he could still walk around with assistant right now. I’m proud of myself too as I did try my best to help someone who’s really in need and reward back to the society.

We can’t just work, eat and sleep doing the same routine tasks but without doing something that’s meaningful in our live. It is about channeling the collective energy of the community in helping the less fortunate, disabled and underprivileged in our society.

Always remember this phrase : “Celebrate the past, enjoy the present, create our future.” Thanks for those who supported me in the Car Wash Campaign and to those who donated too.

Ong Boy and his Diwali Gift

Even though my Mission to teach Ong Boy was accomplished successfully weeks ago, i still do visit the Home once every 2 weeks to catch up with the folks there and to give Ong Boy a lesson or two about cycling my old bicycle. This time around, i visited him with something special – a diwali hamper which was delivered to my home :)

This guy behaves just like a kid. Hehe. I told him to go share it with his friends, before he ran off with it :)
The past months have gone by and i have tried to teach Ong how to ride this bicycle, although i can admit that i have only managed to accomplish a 40% success rate in teaching him how to ride this bicycle on his own. My presence yesterday at the home brought more joy and happiness which was clearly visible in Ong compared to the very first time i step foot into this shelter.
Although I was painstakingly informed about the theft of my precious bicycle, but nevertheless the hours spent teaching him on this bicycle has indeed made the difference itself as clearly seen when i visited him yesterday. This shows that he enjoys my company more than just the lessons itself, something most members of charity homes and shelters are deprived off - attention and also love.

For me, to share the joy with these unfortunate members of this home for the mentally challenged and handicapped is something i really enjoy doing and gives me the motivation to grow even more successful so that i can further contribute back to the society. Thanks to the Truly Loving Company for providing me this platform to develop myself. I hope there are many more out there who choose to give back to the society instead of just taking – the people needs you.

Route 86

Every year there’s a new book, and every book has 12 Chapters. Now we’re in the 11th. Does time fly too fast, or are we moving too slow?

i spent my first 8 months working from 9 to 6. The next 2.5 months traveling, blogging, and understanding the difference between like, and love. i must say, that i learned more about life by spending 1/3 of my life doing nothing compared to almost 9 months being pregnant with PowerPoint proposals.

179146684

One of the most fulfilling thing that i did and achieved this year was a pledge i took up to make Madam Lily Sin, a stroke victim’s wish (to get a pair of multifocal glasses and hair makeover) come true. The above is an article from The Sun.

My 24th birthday is coming up, and i asked myself many times, “what do i want for my birthday?

The answer, is nothing. i’ve worked hard enough to get everything i wanted (no, my parents don’t superspoil me with stuff), and there’s nothing else i need that i can’t live without.

179146532

Article from Malaysia Today.

Part of me feels grateful to be so lucky, but another part of me feels quite sad because the things that i want are matters that money cannot buy. Well, of course i could still make a list of things i wish i own like a Tiffany & Co. signature ring, a Coach bag, the new Canon S95 (when my S90 is still working perfectly)…

*ehem* Those are the things i (do) want, but give ‘em all to me, next year i want another ring, another bag, another camera. What’s the point? How long could the happiness by looking and touching these expensive things last in one’s lifetime? Truth is, it is never enough.

But by using 100% effort and 0 cent, i found a kind of fulfilling happiness that will always remain in me.

i am very sure my other blogger buddies feel the same way too.

Kimberly received donation from her readers and managed to buy 3 hospital beds instead of 1; which was the initial goal, while Sai Mat Kong organized a charity car wash to raise funds and he did GREAT! i’m very proud of us.

Below are some pictures taken at the TLC Promise Me Campaign Celebration Party, photos courtesy of Kim Cun.

Michelle from Nuffnang and me in hues of baby blue~ what i admire about this lady is that she doesn’t waste money on branded stuff and still looks like a brand herself!

For example, you might wanna ask her whose blue blazer that belongs too and how much does it costs her to look more pro than me! LOL

Waiting for the ceremony to start… and there’s the stage where we received our certificates.

The BIG HEART Group Picture !!!!! :D

IMG_4447

Ever since i joined this campaign, whenever i feel upset (for valid reasons OR sad because of PMS), i tend to think of my very first visit to NASAM, the strokees’ house.

The provoking image of an old lady fed thru a pipe and not her mouth subconsciously makes me touch mine, and wonder why do i ever complain with this pair of lips, when even those who can’t even use ‘em to chew, are living everyday with smiles on their faces.

Promise Me to take up a pledge next year because i Promise You that it is gonna be a priceless experience, and an everlasting memory you will never forget. ;)
