Last week, the folks from The Truly Loving Company (TLC) threw a recognition ceremony for everyone who participated in the TLC Promise Me Campaign. There was a total of 70 pledges and ALL of them were successfully completed!
It was a low-key but nice ceremony
# – Many people were there.
All of us got a certificate each. It has become my favourite cert because it’s a reminder of the wonderful experience and valuable life lessons learnt while taking part in the campaign.
# – Receiving my certificate from Madam Julia Chong, the CEO of TLC.
# – My fellow bloggers who participated in the campaign, Cindy and Saimatkong also got theirs.
Cindy got a custom-made multi-focal spectacles for Madam Lily Sin and Saimatkong got a customised ankle brace for stroke patient Mr. Kau.
I was asked to share my experience participating in this campaign. I was nervous while on stage but happy to be able to tell everyone about this life-changing experience
# – Thanks Nuffnang and TLC for this wonderful opportunity.
The brainchild behind this campaign is Mr. Jonathan Teoh, who left his high flying job as an architect to plan, organise and make TLC Promise Me campaign a reality. His hard work is admirable & his motivations noble. If there’s anyone I truly respect, Jonathan is one of them.
# – With Jonathan Teoh, the force behind TLC Promise Me.
I’m really, really glad that I was part of the campaign. You know, I really didn’t want to do it at first and gave myself a lot of excuses. I was skeptical and doubtful, basically I didn’t think I would be successful in raising anything! And the worst thing? I agreed to do it due to the embarrassment of saying “no”.
But as I received more and more support in the forms of donations and well-wishes, my perceptions gradually changed. I am still surprised by the fact that 3 hospitals beds have been bought and delivered to Goo Tyng Tong and his friends.
The credit is certainly not mine alone. You know who you are and I hope you can feel the exact same contentment I’m feeling from doing this because you deserve it so much more than me!

Hi all,
I’m so sorry I’ve been away from blogging for so long. I know, I know, the word “Busy” is just too over-rated.
As you can recall, the official date for me to bring Izzul to ride the Cable Car at Genting Highlands were October 23rd, two days after the closing period for the donation (October 21). Unfortunately, the Genting Highlands cable cars were closed to public due to maintainence from seven weeks and would only be available for rides from November 21st onwards.
A little hiccup there. Therefore, the pledge were postponed to December 11th 2010.
So as promised, here is the list of donors and the amount donated. A huge thank you to my friends and family who sharing my pledge and to make it come true
Donors:
1. The charitable Ismail sisters–Alina, Emily and Emilia Ismail: RM 150
2. Ong Bee Kim: RM 50
3. Martin Chew: RM 50
4. Gooi Yi Ling: RM 50
5. Alex Ooi Beng Keat: RM 20
6. Urbane Ethos: RM 100
7. Arif Alias: RM 50
The grand total for this pledge is RM 470, that was collected within 14 days. The collection will go to Izzul’s Genting Trip. After the trip, I will blog about my day of fulfilling the pledge and how the money was spent. The rest of the donation will then be channeled to Rumah Aman through TLC.
Again, thank you Alina, the twins Emily and Emilia, Mrs. Ong, Martin, Yi Ling, Alex, Arif and Urbane Ethos for sharing this pledge to fulfill Izzul’s wish to ride the cable car.
I’ve been waiting forever to write this post. As some of you might know, I made a pledge a couple of months ago to raise funds to buy a hospital bed for Goo Tyng Tong, a bed-ridden 17 year old under the TLC Promise Me campaign.
Participating in this has been an enlightening experience for myself. I am still overwhelmed and touched by the amount of support shown by not just friends but complete strangers. I’ve promised myself that whenever I feel jaded or disappointed with people (most often than not over petty, silly issues), I’ll always think about this amazing display of generosity, kindness and selflessness to remind myself again that there are good in this world.
Well, after some unforeseen delay, Goo Tyng Tong’s hospital bed has been successfully delivered to him. On top of that, two of his housemates in similar plights have also received a hospital bed each.
Yes, thanks to your support and kindness, we’ve managed to raise enough money for 3 hospital beds. Thank you so, so, so much! The beds are double fowlers, basically means they can be raised in two parts, which would make tasks like feeding, changing clothes, cleaning, pass water and many more much, much easier. Hospital mattresses were also bought and I was assured by the vendor that they are not covered in ordinary PVC but with breathable water proof material.
# – Goo seems happy with his new bed
On behalf of Goo and his friends, I would like to specially thank and extend my gratitude to all the contributors below:

Hello again!
First of all, I would like to apologize for putting off the writing of this final wrap-up for the fulfillment of Mohd. Hatim’s wish because I’ve been really caught up in a lot of things, especially with dealing with my own studies as well as with regards to the University & University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) charge by the university against me and three of my other Political Science course mates from UKM. However, this post is not about what I’ve been up to recently or what has been going on with regards to my UUCA case, so I shall leave that to your ‘Google’ kung fu to find out more about it. And yes, I am one of the four from THE UKM4. Heh…
Anyway, to go straight into my final wrap-up for the fulfillment of Mohd. Hatim’s wish, I would like to start by thanking ALL OF YOU for the great work you have done, generous contributions that you have donated as well as the encouraging support that you have fueled me with throughout the entire fulfillment of this pledge. It wasn’t easy and I couldn’t have done it without all of your support and I sincerely appreciate every single one of the generous gestures.
Looking back at what we have achieved through the fulfillment of Mohd. Hatim’s wish, with the little resources that we had, I think we did pretty well and created quite a bit of an impact and awareness in the society, urging more and more people to be more participative in issues concerning the society. Throughout the one week period of the photography exhibition, we have actually impacted a lot more people than we originally anticipated due to the great location generously sponsored by Jaya 33′s management.
Aside from creating positive impact locally, I’m also pleased to say that the pledge for Mohd. Hatim managed to create positive impact at international level! Colin Shafer of Colinizing Photography brought about 20 Burmese children, who are currently participating in the “See The World Through Our Eyes” photo-education project, to join us for the exhibition. It was really too bad that Uncle Hatim couldn’t be with the children because he suffered a terrible fall on the same day he was supposed to meet the children. In the end, the children also had a great time looking at the photographs as well as to learn more about how each picture is taken by Uncle Hatim, as explained by Colin.
Whenever I look back at this picture of the exhibition below, my mind will always wonder back into that 1-2 months period of this entire project to fulfill Mohd. Hatim’s wish. It made me think about the altruistic nature of human and also the generous support from the public, willing to give up its own time and money, to help to fulfill the wish of a total stranger. I’ve droned on and on again about all the generous sponsorship in kind and financial contributions donated to help make this entire project and photography exhibition possible. Also, a quick shout-out to Nikon & Epson Malaysia for their generous sponsorship of the printing of the photographs as well.
Taking down the pictures one-by-one at the last day of the exhibition, for the very last time, made me reflect on how it must’ve felt for Uncle Hatim to see his own works and photographs printed, mounted and put up for exhibition, to be shared with the rest of the world. All I can say is that the smile that broke out between his lips on the official launching of the exhibition by Senator Gan Ping Sieu made it all worth the pain, sweat and tears that I’ve put into putting this entire thing together. It wasn’t my own effort alone but I must say that the feeling of seeing someone’s wish fulfilled have made it all worth it for me.
Throughout the photography exhibition at Jaya 33, my routine EVERYDAY was to go to the exhibition venue at Jaya 33, PJ as early as I could from UKM, Bangi by public transportation to set-up and put the pictures up before the shops open so that when the first customers of the day stepped into the mall, the photographs are already up for display. And every evening, before I head back to campus, I would take all the photographs down and leave them at the receptionist’s desk for safe-keeping.
I’ve also promised the management that I will keep the entire exhibition space clean and scratch-free on the tiled floors throughout the exhibition. After I’ve put all the photographs away, I began to fold the chairs and tables to be put aside, waiting to be collected by the kind and helpful people at Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya, who played a crucial role in fulfilling Mohd. Hatim’s wish by supply us with the exhibition panels used for the exhibition.
Something that really touched my heart at the end of this entire project was that on the last day of the exhibition, my friend from campus who also suffered a stroke in his mid-20s, actually came and visited the exhibition. Well, he was there mainly because he wanted to get in touch with NASAM but at the same time, this exhibition is also for stroke victims like him, who struggles from day-to-day fighting to keep their spirit up and to continue to believe in their own ability to break free from the constraints of a stroke condition.
Say HELLO to Loong:
I really don’t know what to say to wrap things up but I just want to say that it has been one incredible roller coaster ride for me for the past 1 or 2 months that I’ve worked on this project. The media coverage on the exhibition was also pretty good, considering that we were not only covered by the mainstream press media (special credits to Jonathan Teoh for the hi-res scans) but also on public radio!
I’ve also transferred the generous donations from the public for Mohd. Hatim into his account on the first day of Raya 2010 and below is a computer-generated receipt from Maybank2U.
Oh well, I guess this is it! Very likely the last time I’m going to write in this space and just want thank all of you again for the great time and awesome lessons learn from this entire project. Special shout-out to Jonathan for all of the assistance, contacts and encouragement along the way that have made all these possible.
When my brother told me about this Promise Me campaign, I took up the pledge to raise funds for 2 blood pressure reading machine for NASAM. I used the simplest way to get funds, which is to tell my close friends about this campaign, and they assisted me to get enough money for the 2 blood pressure reading machine.
I had been in contact with the person that sell the equipment, and it will be order within these few days and most probably it will be delivered before the end of the month.
I really hope this small contribution can make a difference!

(Group Picture of Cheque Ceremony to Hospis Malaysia)
Various community groups from TLC’s Promise Me campaign fulfilled their pledges to Hospis Malaysia and presented a total of RM42,150.70 to the charity’s general manager, Puan Rosehayati Ahmad Noordin. The proceeds will be used to buy a variety of medical equipment such as syringe drivers, oxygen concentrators, nebulisers, wheelchairs and ripple mattresses. “By providing us a wide range of new medical equipment, Hospis Malaysia is now better placed to deliver a better quality of care to our patients especially for the individuals who cannot afford such equipment” said Ahmad Noordin. She added that the equipment will greatly bring comfort and ease to their patients.
The four groups involved used a variety of ways to deliver on their promises. Bald4Good, a social media campaign by Wit Ink Creative dared 11 brave individuals including two sisters to go bald for charity. By leveraging on its network of clients and friends, together with Schick-Energizer, Kaspersky and Autogridz magazine, they raised RM35,320 on August 21st, 2010 at a shaving ceremony at Social Changkat, Bukit Bintang.

AIESEC Malaysia pooled together its network of communities such as AIESEC Alumni Malaysia, Local Comittees in Taylor’s University College, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaya together with student members, Michele Chang and Low Tzu Peng to deliver on a total of RM4680 to Hospis Malaysia
(AIESEC President Mohammad Alif representing AIESEC participants)
Similarly, The Truly Loving Company’s Wonderladies whipped up a charity breakfast spread in HP Towers and engaged neighbouring offices to support their initiative. A total of RM1480 was netted from their sales of delicious pastries and cakes.
Bernama TV as the official TV partner of the campaign organized a Garage Sale in Wisma Bernama on October 5th, 2010 and engaged their staff to contribute pre-loved items for sale. They raised a total of RM1270 to fulfil three pledges allocated to them and donated the balance of RM720 to Hospis Malaysia.

(Final Amount Raised)
Julia Chong, CEO of The Truly Loving Company, said “We welcome the way TLC Promise Me campaign engages individuals as well as corporations in a relevant yet rewarding manner.” She thanked the individuals for going the extra distance in fulfilling their pledges and added that TLC’s Promise Me had delivered an additional 23% worth of funding for new medical equipment on top of its original list of pledges to Hospis Malaysia at the beginning of the campaign.

We bagged our lunch last Monday!
Fundraising-At-Work No. 2: Everyone pledged to bring our own lunch to work and bag our lunch money for Madam Tan’s cause. No guilty ones and hence no fine this time around but we had fun at our little food-tasting banquet!
Goo Tyng Tong is 17 years old. He is born in Kota Kinabalu on 07 December 1993. He is bed-ridden and most of the time he will be lying in bed. His wish is to have his own proper bed like a hospital bed.
